In 1973, Westsail installed a 3-piece, laminated fir bowsprit onto hull #101. In 2004 at Lake Mead, the bowsprit was showing signs of delimitation or coming unglued. We knew it was only a matter of time before it would have to be replace, but we saturated it with epoxy resin and it got us through a few more years of sailing. However, the time on the hard let the dry rot set it and there was no saving it.
It was ready to come off in pieces. The lifelines were the only thing holding it up. I removed the rail and it came off quite quickly. The new stainless bowsprit is quite solid and a terrific upgrade. It will last as long as the boat. I like projects I only have to do once!
